Compositions
Understanding that, as stated elsewhere, String Quartet No. 1
marks the arrival of my mature language, I wish still to distinguish
between works — early and late — that attempt and meet
important objectives (italics) and those which do not (normal).
Among the latter, all before the first quartet, are those whose
precompositional obsessions incapacitated any saving invention I
might have brought to bear on them. A good, possibly crucial,
part of my maturation as a composer in fact consisted of liberating
myself from those academic strictures which unfortunately
dominated the atmosphere of my conservatory days. Looking back
I marvel at just how long it took me to take the necessary leap into
… myself. Now, at the least, I start from there.
